2 February 2020 – Some flocks of Barn Swallows sighted, heat is intense with highest temperatures recorded for January – Angie
1 February 2020 – Southern Spain – My first pair of swallows has just arrived. That is 14 days earlier than ever before….global warming I suppose.
Interestingly I have lived in this house for 19 years and the first swallow to arrive is the exact same location on the same wooden beam, so perhaps one can assume it is in the genes of that particular family. This has been the same every year they are always the first often by more than a week.
This is a very large house with many different nesting sites, inside and outside of the house, so I think this is significant evidence over 19 years.
This is the same family where last year I was ill in bed, and he came and sat above my bed looking down at me. He even encouraged two of his offspring to spend a little time with me inside my bedroom. When all the other swallows started to collect together for their long journey he stayed, finally when he knew they were about to depart he made a special gesture to say goodbye. There were 3 of us living in the house, and we could hear from his calling something a little different, so we stood up and he flew in a tight circle around our heads……then was gone.
Kind Regards Pauline.
January 2020 – Extreme heat and the Barn Swallows disappeared – Angie
16 January 2020 – Southbroom Kwazulu Natal – I chatted to you a year or two back about our migration here of barn swallows and how they had left early. The end of last year they returned but their numbers have been significantly reduced and think they may have left us already in the past few days (will double check this evening but never saw them last night)… just wondering how your sightings have been going there? Looking forward to hearing from you, fondest regards Taryn
